Introduction

A portable, electric Morse signaling lamp, used for communications during World War 2. It was designed to be used for short range daylight communication but, obviously, it could also be used at night.

The lamp and component parts all fit snugly into the two compartments of the green military issues case, the top of which is covered with canvas. The lamp can be mounted on a Helios tripod or staked in the ground. This lamp allows for precise morse signaling through the manipulator which is attached to the lamp transport the box cover. This signaling lamp used an external battery as a power source. An adjustable screen is provided (used with a colored lens) for nighttime signaling under enemy observation.

This lamp was also made during the conflict in Canada and Australia.

Uses

signal lamp, Aldis lamp or a Morse lamp, Morse signaling lamp

History

A signal lamp (sometimes called an Aldis lamp or a Morse lamp) is a visual signaling device for optical communication by flashes of a lamp, typically using Morse code. The idea of flashing dots and dashes from a lantern was first put into practice by Captain Philip Howard Colomb, of the Royal Navy, in 1867. Colomb's design used limelight for illumination, and his original code was not the same as Morse code. During World War I, German signalers used optical Morse transmitters called Blinkgerät, with a range of up to 8 km (5 miles) at night, using red filters for undetected communications.
