The naming of the trucks followed Mercedes-Benz new naming strategy: the main one or two digits signified the gross weight rating of the vehicle, with the last two digits representing maximum horsepower in tens of horsepower (with a zero if required). LP608 has a maximum total weight of 6 tons (13,000 pounds) and a production engine of 80 PS (59 kW), while the LP 1632 is a 16 ton (35,000 lb) truck with around 320 PS (235 kW). The LP range proved a strong seller, with German Mercedes-Benz sales in the heavy truck segment increasing by 153 percent between 1965 and 1973.
