The developer is awesome. I asked for a little feature and *boom* there it is. I think this addon will be a gem in all the things I do with blender because of that feature.
If you're an animator and you composite outside of Blender, then cryptomattes have the potential to be amazing. There's just one problem: support is not universal. Things like Nuke of course, cover cryptomattes out of the box. Adobe? Fat chance. After Effects barely covers EXR files, let alone cryptomattes.
That's where this beautiful addon comes in: it gets me the power of cryptomattes, everywhere.
Prior to having this addon, I would have a few awful choices for how I did my compositing in AE (I prefer to do it all in post and AE is at least easy to use). I could either: do renders/passes for each object I needed to do something special with, I could do the cryptomattes by hand, I could do ID mattes and do keying/masking to separate out the objects. As you get more and more objects involved however, it gets to be more complicated.
In my case, I need to do something like 30 separate objects per scene. It takes 1-2 hours to manually setup nodes for 30 objects and files. This addon takes about 20 seconds. I tried it with 100+ objects, it took maybe 5 minutes, each had its node and output, it worked.
If you are working with AE, or anything not friendly to cryptomattes, this is YOUR tool to quickly set up your mattes for dozens of objects. That is the power of cryptomattes, and now we can have that power, anywhere.
