Antique Piano And Stool

by Ed Ackerman in Models

Illustrated documentation is included.

Please note that some materials used in this model make use of the Color Mix node.  If this model is to be used with Blender 3.4 and later, the Color Mix node will automatically be converted to the newer Mix node which replaces it, and should look and render fine.  However, once converted and saved with Blender 3.4 and later, the material will no longer work with Blender versions prior to 3.4.

Description:

Inspired by an 1896 Vose and Sons upright grand piano, this model contains both an upright cabinet grand, and a piano stool.  The piano is made of heavily carved mahogany, and a piano of this type would have been a very expensive purchase in its era.  The piano and stool would look good as an accent or centerpiece in any period or contemporary scene.  It is of sufficient detail that it will render well in a close-up.  The name “Steinman and Sons” is fictitious.

Usage:

The model is contained in a single .blend file with all textures/images/materials packed inside.  There are two collections in the file, one for the piano and the other for the piano stool.  To use either one (or both), you can append it into your scene as follows:

Go to the File Menu and pull down to Append

Find the “Antique_Piano_and_Stool.blend” file and double click on it.

Double Click on the Collection Icon

Select the “Append_Antique_Piano” and/or the “Append_Antique_Piano_Stool” collection and Click Append.

Note that the model components are all parented to a master Empty Item represented by the large labelled axis.  You can move or rotate each Empty to adjust the location and orientation of these models.

Technical:

The antique piano and stool were modelled in Blender 3.1 and the models use PBR shaders with procedural adjustments to base color, bump, and fine surface imperfections.

Subdivision modifiers are used on some of the components to smoothen the rendered result.  These subdivision modifiers are not currently set to display in the 3D viewport.  They can be enabled by clicking on the viewport icon in the modifier properties tab for each part.
Images were rendered in Cycles.  All materials work in Eevee as well, however some adjustment to the wood material bump strength may be necessary.
