Contains a low-poly version of the character, as well as a production resolution, where the extra character shapes are saved as shape-keys. 

Apply the mirror and the 1 subdivision to the lowpoly to make the topo match with the production resolution model. Then you can blend between all of them and create your own characters, using the base characters as a start.
