SNAP UTILITIES

The Addon Snap Utilities provides quick and easy ways to model with architectural precision. It's a great tool for modeling houses, furnitures, equipment, etc. This add-on implements four tools for editing objects. They are: LINE, MOVE, ROTATE and PUSH/PULL FACE. Each tool has the snap system for vertex, edge and face.

1. LINE:

The tool "LINE" allows the creation of edges with length and direction precisely specified . Just click with the LMB at the start point and to proceed specifying each new vertex of the line with the LMB or the Enter button. This tool resembles the Blender knife tool, but now can be snapped to the edge's perpendicular or be drawn with accurate length and direction.

2. MOVE:

The difference between the tool "MOVE" and Blender's "Translate" is that you can now specify the starting movement point and the end movement point. Just click in a point of the object and move toward a point on another object.

3. ROTATE:

With the "ROTATE" tool, you can specify the axis of rotation before rotating the object.

4. EXTRUDE AND RESHAPE:

EXTRUDE AND RESHAPE is a tool that makes an extrusion that automatically intersecting faces. This gives freedom to push and pull volumes, once the topology of them is automatically set.

Controllers

'X' = Constraint the cursor movement on the axis X

'Y' = Constraint the cursor movement on the axis Y

'Z' = Constraint the cursor movement on the axis Z

'Shift' = Constraint the cursor movement towards an edge

'Enter' = Confirms the numerical value written in the header for the line length or movement distance of an object

'LeftMouse' = starts the lines drawing for tool LINE, choose the movement's point of origin for tool MOVE and ROTATE

'RigthMouse' = 1 click stops the lines drawing, 2 clicks completes the tool's execution

'TAB' = Snap limited only Faces

'ESC' = cancel

1. Installing Snap Utilities

The easiest way to install Snap Utilities is to do so directly from Blender. You can do this by going to File > User Preferences > Add-ons > Install from File. This will open a File Browser in Blender, allowing you to navigate to and select the mesh_snap_utilities.zip file you downloaded. Press Install from file. Once installed, Blender should automatically filter the addons list to show only Snap Utilities You can then enable the add-on by clicking the checkbox on the upper right of the add-on panel.

2. Usage and Workflow

Once activated, a new Snap Utilities panel will be added to the viewport toolbar, so long as a mesh object is selected. The toolbar is shown in both Object Mode and Edit Mode under the Snap Utilities tab.  The basic workflow is to first select an object, Choose between tools: LINE, MOVE, ROTATE or PUSH/PULL FACE and perform the operation with the LMB, when satisfied, finalize the transaction with a double click of the RMB.

2.1 Using LINE tool

After selecting the first point with the "RMB" you can specify the length of the line just by typing a value and pressing "Enter". When approaching the cursor to a face, edge or vertex, the cursor is automatically snapped to the element - The cursor can also be snapped to center or perpendicular of an edge. The controllers "X", "Y", "Z" and "Shift" constrain the cursor movement around the highlighted element

2.2 Using MOVE tool

The same line's snap elements work in the command "MOVE" also. You can specify the origin movement point before moving the object. Move the mouse over the object, When the desired point is highlighted, click with the LMB on it and then the object goes to follow the cursor. After the specified the starting movement point and  go to the end movement point in other object. Just click with the LMB on the destination point and finalize the operation with the RMB.

2.3 Using ROTATE tool

With the "ROTATE" tool, you can specify the axis of rotation before rotating the object. You can restrict the direction of the axis of rotation before rotate the object (X, Y, Z or Shift). The Axis default is Z or the object normal face. By clicking with the left mouse button, you can specify the direction the object will. Taking advantage of the same snap options listed above.

2.4 Using EXTRUDE AND RESHAPE tool

EXTRUDE AND RESHAPE is a tool that makes an extrusion that automatically intersecting faces. This gives freedom to push and pull volumes, once the topology of them is automatically set.

To use this tool, simply click once with the left mouse button on the face, perform the desired movement and click again with the left mouse button.

Numeric values are also allowed with this tool. After click with the LMB the first timeby simply typing a value using the number keypad and press Enter.

'F8' = Automatic constrain .

'ESC' = cancel

      Hi gk-1, any problems can be solved in Inbox. Blender2.8 is still beta and its API changes constantly, make sure you use the latest Blender build.

    This is a great Add-on! I requested similar features to these on right-click select before I realized this was around. Another big plus is that the developer was so quick to respond to my questions. Thank you!

    However, with Line tool I can't cut throw like original knife tool.
    And I want have shortcut key setting for Line tool.

    • GERMANO over 1 year ago

      Blender by default allows you to add shortcut to the operators ;) Click with the RMB on the tool (LINE, MOVE, ROTATE ...) and choose the "Add Shortcut" option. Do not forget to save user preferences.
