Mountain scapes will enable you to:
- Create better looking environments through the use of premade terrains
- Use 3D terrain instead of a 2D backdrop
- Use micro displacecment to increase quality and save memory space
Why you shouldn't use 2D backdrops
Using 2D backdrops often is the common and easy way to get a quick background in. Just use a decent image, place it behind your scene and skip on the sculpting or texturing part.
Problem is: a 2D backdrop will never correctly match the lighting in your scene.
Additionally, animating with an image backdrop will almost always look flat.
Rendering with 2D backdrop vs. rendering with mountain scapes
