v2.85     [18.03.2017]

  • Reduced desaturation of reflections at high (fresnel) angles to better match PBR model. Not so actual for steel but just in case...
  • Slightly improved default look  (now rims will be more shiny).

v2.8     [21.02.2017]

  • Improved PBR model (now non-metals part of the materials - if any - have better fresnel reflections).
  • Grunge and micro-scratches now affect paint layer.
  • Added new parameter "Suppress repetitiveness" (inside "Main settings" section) doing exactly that. Useful only for large surfaces (2x2m and up).
  • Added a lot of additional options to tweak - hope you like them :).
  • General optimizations for node tree - that "Material" view mode hang up is still here but it will unhang  ~2x faster.
  • Parameters "Metal brightness & color" and "Metal roughness" reworked again - same values may lead to different results now.

Known issues: #1: Blender v2.78b have problems rendering pointiness map and all material effects that use that feature (edges, caverns) will have artifacts. Solution - use latest "Daily build" version of Blender or previous versions 2.78 or 2.78a.

Known issues #2: when 3D viewport switched to "Material" mode Blender hangs for minute or two, after that meshes with that material will look pure black. This issue reported as bug but unfortunately can't be fixed because "Material" viewport rendering mode by design ignores all optimizations inside node tree and trying to render ALL nodes (and dies on complex material like this one); maybe in Blender v2.8 it will be fixed.

v2.6     [30.10.2016]

  • Improvements in "Metal brightness & color" and "Non-metal brightness and color" effects on color of diffuse texture.

Known issues: when 3D viewport switched to "Material" mode Blender hangs for minute or two, after that meshes with that material will look pure black. This issue reported as bug but unfortunately can't be fixed because "Material" viewport rendering mode by design ignores all optimizations inside node tree and trying to render ALL nodes (and dies on complex material like this one); maybe in Blender v2.8 it will be fixed.

v2.5    [25.10.2016]

  • Fixed bug with dim overheat pattern colors if metal has grey or dark metalness map.
  • Reworked "Metal brightness & color" and "Non-metal brightness & color" ... again. Now they finally bug-free but same values gives different result on material, keep that in mind.
  • Material re-calibrated again, mostly same look but better backup old variant before update. Just in case.

Known issues: when 3D viewport switched to "Material" mode Blender hangs for minute or two, after that meshes with that material will look pure black. This issue reported as bug but unfortunately can't be fixed because "Material" viewport rendering mode by design ignores all optimizations inside node tree and trying to render ALL nodes (and dies on complex material like this one); maybe in Blender v2.8 it will be fixed.

v2.4     [22.10.2016]

  • Fixed bug when "Non-metal brightness & color" parameter works only when "Grunge amount" is non-zero.
  • Reworked "Metal brightness & color" and "Non-metal brightness & color" algorithms, now they strictly in PBR range and give adequate feedback; note that same values to these params now give different results. Material re-calibrated.
  • Improved grunge layer. Now at low values of "Grunge amount" param (0-0.5) it gives more interesting results (film-like appearance), like it was before 2.2 update.
  • Some minor improvements to node tree setup in micro-scratches section.

Known issues: when 3D viewport switched to "Material" mode Blender hangs for minute or two, after that meshes with that material will look pure black. This issue reported as bug but unfortunately can't be fixed because "Material" viewport rendering mode by design ignores all optimizations inside node tree and trying to render ALL nodes (and dies on complex material like this one); maybe in Blender v2.8 it will be fixed.

v2.3

  • Micro-fix: removed 2x boost to diffuse colors then grunge layer is activated.

Known issues: when 3D viewport switched to "Material" mode Blender hangs for minute or two, after that meshes with that material will look pure black. This issue reported as bug but unfortunately can't be fixed because "Material" viewport rendering mode by design ignores all optimizations inside node tree and trying to render ALL nodes (and dies on complex material like this one); maybe in Blender v2.8 it will be fixed.

v2.2

  • Grunge effect improved & optimized (less VRAM consuming; now looks different comparing to previous one, backup old version of this material if you like it!)
  • Added new parameter "Non-metal brightness & color" (it is affecting non-metal parts of material like rust or dirt in dents).
  • Grunge texture now not affected by "low-res" texture mode
  • Faster render time - up to 60% (fully implemented Blender 2.78 possibilities to my node tree!)

Known issues: when 3D viewport switched to "Material" mode Blender hangs for minute or two, after that meshes with that material will look pure black. This issue reported as bug but unfortunately can't be fixed because "Material" viewport rendering mode by design ignores all optimizations inside node tree and trying to render ALL nodes (and dies on complex material like this one); maybe in Blender v2.8 it will be fixed.

v2.1

  • Minor improvement: overheat colors not so vivid now at "1" value of "Overheat" parameter.
  • Minor improvement: diffuse fade more correctly under fresnel reflections at high angles.

Known issues: when 3D viewport switched to "Material" mode Blender hangs for minute or two, after that meshes with that material will look pure black. This issue reported as bug but unfortunately can't be fixed because "Material" viewport rendering mode by design ignores all optimizations inside node tree and trying to render ALL nodes (and dies on complex material like this one); maybe in Blender v2.8 it will be fixed.

v2.0

  • Material reworked from scratch, now minimal supported version of Blender is v2.78 (latest).
  • Distance/closeup layers feature removed.
  • New features: overheat/grunge/paint layers.
  • New features: "worn amount" parameter split to "Caverns are darker" and "Edges are polished".
  • New UI for material parameters.
  • Material is now optimized: when grunge/paint/dust/micro-scratches layers are not activated they did not consume any VRAM/render time.
  • Materials "UV density checker" and "RM Steel generic low-res" are removed - their functions now are just parameters of steel material.

Known issues: when 3D viewport switched to "Material" mode Blender hangs for minute or two, after that meshes with that material will look pure black. This issue reported as bug but unfortunately can't be fixed because "Material" viewport rendering mode by design ignores all optimizations inside node tree and trying to render ALL nodes (and dies on complex material like this one); maybe in Blender v2.8 it will be fixed.

v1.1

  • "Dust amount" parameter now didn't affect material roughness.
  • "Dust amount" at maximum value ("1") now producing way more noticeable effect.
  • Added parameters "Dust only on top (0 - off, 1 - on)" and "Dust brightness and color".
  • "Worn amount" at maximum value ("1") now producing more noticeable effect.

v1.0

  • Initial release.
