The Ruinator: Mesh Destroyer

Brent Patterson in Modifier Setups

Why did you call it the Ruinator?
It makes ruins out of meshes. I couldn't think of anything more clever. Only towards the end of this process did I realize it was one typo away from being The Urinator.
I've done everything right, but it doesn't look as good as your example. What am I doing wrong?
The Ruinator and other procedural methods are tools that invoke chaos. Choosing what chaos to keep, what to take out via editing, then how to light and photograph the resulting chaos is the art in the process. Good results take time. Try different colored lights, unique camera angles and lenses, and variations between large, medium, and small shapes. My friend, Gleb Alexandrov, gave a great lecture on this at the Blender Conference a few years ago: https://youtu.be/qMH_J_vcoqE. Don't give up, study other work that inspires you, and practice everyday.
There's no hole on my mesh where I created the vertex group for The Ruinator, but there is beams and debris poking through the mesh at that location.
On your mesh's material, you must add the group named 'Ruinator Alpha Generator' and attach it to the alpha input of your shader.
My mesh is invisible after I activate The Ruinator.
Make sure you first create a small vertex group on your mesh called 'ruined' before you activate The Ruinator.
Blender crashes as soon as I activate The Ruinator in my modifiers.
Make sure your mesh isn't too large. If you're on a humble computer like most of us, start The Ruinator on smaller objects first.
There's no debris in my mesh, only beams.
Make sure you set the object origin to the center of the ruined mesh. The debris is automatically deleted after a certain distance from the ruined object.
My debris mesh is massive. How do I get all the small detail?
Be sure your mesh is large (over 20 meters tall or wide) and make sure you have applied all transforms (CTRL-A).
Will any mesh work?
Yes. Some better than others. The best meshes to start with are simple, low-poly meshes with uniform topology. This hasn't been tested on meshes that have armatures. Curves and meta objects will not work. So if you're going to ruin some text, convert it to a mesh first. I've found it best to remesh text using the smooth option before I use the Ruinator on it.
