Pieces Of 8-Bit Image Converter

by Pieces of 8-bit in Modifier Setups

Pieces of 8-bit Image Converter is an image/video conversion tool, which faithfully mimics several 8-bit era computers' graphic modes. It utilizes Blender's Geometry Nodes to recreate the graphic restrictions imposed on those machines due to hardware limitations of the time (custom palettes, character attributes, etc.)

Current supported modes include:

  • Amstrad CPC Mode 0 (Lo-Res)
  • Amstrad CPC Mode 1 (Hi-Res)
  • ZX Spectrum
  • Commodore 64 Multicolor (Lo-Res)
  • Commodore 64 Hi-Res
  • Commodore 64 PETSCII (Text mode)

The modifier can be added to any mesh object, essentially replacing its geometry with a grid of colored quads/pixels. It then allows for customization of your image or video, with all properties being natively animatable.

Also included is a customizable Text Layer node, which allows adding bitmap text (monospace 8x8) over your image/video. Alternatively, it can be used as a transition mask between the two input images. Select from 4 available fonts or create and import your own.

As an added bonus, you can export your completed images to be displayed on the actual machine being simulated. In the text editor you will find Python scripts (one for every graphic mode) which will create native files for your selected machine, at a literal click of a button. These can then be run on an emulator or real hardware.
