The Mesh Groups addon is visible in Edit Mode in the Sidebar (hotkey N) > Mesh Groups. Start by entering a name for the new group in the "Name" panel. Press the "+" button to add the new mesh group. To delete the active mesh group, press the "-" button. The "Assign", "Remove", "Select" and "Deselect" buttons work in a similar way as the Vertex Groups buttons in the original Blender version. Make sure to be in a single selection mode (vertex, edge or face selection mode). The current selection mode will determine the type of mesh group when pressing "Assign". Once a mesh group as a selection mode associated with it (e.g. edges), it is impossible to assign other mesh types to it (e.g. vertices or faces).

DISCLAIMER: Mesh groups are stored in the object data as custom property. Removing this custom property will also delete the mesh groups. Changing the geometry of the mesh by e.g. applying modifiers or using Dyntopo will not preserve the mesh groups.

* Rename
Rename the active mesh group. Enter a new name in the "Name" panel and press "Rename".

* Assign
Assign the selected geometry to the active mesh group. This adds the current selection to the mesh group and does not overwrite the existing mesh group data. An error message will appear if the current selection mode does not match the mesh type of the active mesh group.

* Remove
Remove the selected geometry from the active mesh group. An error message will appear if the current selection mode does not match the mesh type of the active mesh group.

* Select
Select all geometry assigned to the active mesh group. Pressing this button will change the selection mode to the mesh type that is associated with the active mesh group (vertex, edge or face selection mode). Pressing "Select" retains the current selection and adds the geometry of the active mesh group to the selection.

* Deselect
Deselect all geometry assigned to the active mesh group. Pressing this button will change the selection mode to the mesh type that is associated with the active mesh group (vertex, edge or face selection mode). Pressing "Deselect" retains the current selection and subtracts the geometry of the active mesh group from the selection.
